The work

What you'd do

You guide small groups: locals and visitors on our public tours, plus private groups, school classes and cruise passengers.

You start on one tour and learn it properly before adding another.

Every tour runs to our script and to time. The delivery is yours.

Who does well here

Is this right for me?

Our guides came to it from very different places. These are the backgrounds that tend to do well, with the guides who prove it.

Students of history, culture and the arts

You already read the city closely. Guiding pays you to share it, on days that fit your timetable.

  • Sam

Has always had a strong interest in culture, heritage and history. Growing up in a talkative family, storytelling came naturally.

Performers

Actors, comedians, musicians and presenters. You can hold a group, read the room and land a line, and a tour asks for all three.

Teachers and lecturers, working or retired

You've spent years making the past interesting to a room full of people. On tour, the room walks with you.

  • Daniel

A high school History teacher for more than 20 years, bringing the past to life through storytelling and a genuine curiosity about people.

A second career

Several of our guides came to it after a career in something else. Care for people and curiosity carry straight across.

  • Michelle

A retired nurse who has travelled widely and keeps giving back to her community.

  • Joni

Years in retail pharmacy, a role grounded in care, connection and everyday human stories. Loves art, nature and travel.

Historians and researchers

If you love finding the story behind a building, you'll have plenty to work with.

  • Vaughan

A historian with over 15 years of guiding, and the mind behind our Crimes of Perth and Crimes of Fremantle tours.

Travellers and proud locals

Whether you've seen the world or never wanted to leave Perth, what counts is loving to show people around.

  • Gerard

Has visited more than 90 countries. After more than 30 years in Perth, these are the streets he loves sharing most.

  • Jen

Born and raised in Perth. Loves meeting new people and sharing what she knows on a slow walk through the city's streets, alleyways and arcades.

Training

What training do I get?

  1. Online induction

About two hours at your own pace: how our tours run, our booking system, reading the guest list for dietary needs and emergency contacts, checking guests in and working with our venues.

  2. Your kit

We provide the uniform: red shirt, cap, name badge and a winter jacket.

  3. A tour as a guest

Come on a tour for free and watch how it's done.

  4. Training walks and shadowing

Walk the route with us, then shadow a lead guide on real tours.

  5. One tour, learned properly

Each tour has a guide book. You learn one until it's second nature, lead it, then add more.

Qualifications

What do I need?

  • A current first aid and CPR certificate.
  • A Working With Children Check.
  • The right to work in Australia.
  • Afternoons, evenings or weekends you can give us.
  • A way to get to the Perth CBD, Fremantle or both.
  • Comfort on your feet for two to three hours.

No first aid or check yet? You can get both while you train. There's no guiding qualification to hold. At the mini tour we're looking at your personality and your own research.

If most of this sounds like you, apply.

How hiring works

Four steps

  1. Apply

Tell us when you're free and what you've done, and attach your CV.

  2. Video chat

If you're shortlisted, we send a link to book a short, relaxed call.

  3. Your mini tour

We meet at a city landmark and you give a two to five minute tour of it from your own research, treating us as guests. Tour first, then your questions.

  4. Offer

If it's a fit, a letter of offer follows, usually the same or next day.

Not heard back? Email info@twofeet.com.au and we’ll tell you where your application is at.

Pay and hours

Casual, around your week

  • Casual hourly rate plus super, paid fortnightly.
  • Each month you tell us which days you can work, and we roster from that.
  • Most guides work about 6 to 18 hours a month, roughly two to six tours. Hours build through spring and summer.
  • Most of our guides also work elsewhere.

From our guests

What guests say about our guides

“We’ve traveled a lot and experienced many city tours. Two Feet & a Heartbeat tours are the very best. We were fortunate to have Jack as the leader of our tour in Perth and then again in Fremantle. His knowledge of the areas, his stories, and his catering to our special interests were like no others! I noted five stars but these were each worthy of ten!”

Penny Carver, Google, on Jack

“Our guide Michelle was very knowledgeable and she gave us some great information about each building and street. It was at a great pace, we really enjoyed it.”

Bigduygz, Google, on Michelle

“Just did the Crime of Freo tour. Vaughan was a wonderful guide. Very friendly and knowledgeable.”

Nicholas Vuckovic, Google, on Vaughan

Questions

Is the meeting spot also the topic of my mini tour?

Yes. You give the tour of the place where we meet.

Where do tours run?

Around the Perth CBD and Fremantle. Some private groups go to Rottnest Island, by bike.

How many hours will I get?

Most guides work about 6 to 18 hours a month, roughly two to six tours. It's casual and seasonal: spring and summer are busier, and each month you choose the days you can work.
