The one-day guide to seeing Perth’s incredible coastline by bike.

Transparent jewel blue waters, sugary white sand beaches and the only major city in Australia where you can watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean. It is no surprise that Perth is globally envied for its extraordinary coastline.

So here you are, on google, wading through which beaches are a ‘must-see’, how to get there, and how to fit the many gems into one day – look no further, as we break down your unmissable day along the coast, step by step.

Fast Facts…

  • Time: we suggest you start in the morning to enjoy the beaches before the wind arrives
  • Distance: 16kms round trip
  • Start/end point: Scarborough Beach

We begin in Scarborough, an iconic Perth beach that has recently undergone an impressive $30 million facelift. There is something for every type of beachgoer in Scarborough; an abundance of bars, restaurants, grassed areas to picnic and even a beachside swimming pool, and only a short 20 minute drive from Perth city.

Wander down the Esplanade to the Rendezvous Hotel which happens to be the tallest building along Perth’s coastline, and hire a bike from the automated Spinway WA bike stand. Saddle up and head North towards Trigg, on the bike path which runs along West Coast Highway. Despite a slight incline as you ride out of Scarborough, there are endless ocean views to admire along the way.

As you roll into Trigg, expect to see quintessential Perth surfers everywhere, rocky sandy enclaves perfect for sandcastle fun, and rugged reefs housed in sheltered bays for the ideal snorkelling frolic. If you are keen for a bit of adventure to kickstart your coastal tour, pop in to the Trigg Surf School for a private lesson, from $100 per person. If this isn’t for you, continue riding along the coastal path and park up the bike at Mettam’s pool, where you’ll find crystal clear shallows water, and colourful fish species hiding in the rock pools. For a refreshing juice and a bite to eat, we suggest dropping into the locals pick, Yelo.

After a short 15 minute bike ride from Mettam’s Pool, you will find yourself at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, one of Western Australia’s most award-winning attractions. Here, you will find everything from eateries, picnic spaces, ice-cream shops, souvenir shops and a sheltered beach, perfect for the little ones. There is also an aquarium called AQWA, take an underwater peep at sharks, or even jump in with them!

As the sun cools down, and the wind kicks in, hop back on your bike and ride back to Scarborough Beach. Grab a drink at Beach Bar, the best bar for sunset viewing on the esplanade, or order some fish and chips and take a seat on ‘Sunset Hill’ to watch the sun roll down on another beautiful day in Perth, WA.
